SEOUL, South Korea, March 15 (Reuters) - The South Korean Food and Drug Administration on Monday announced it has approved a generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to be sold online without a prescription.
The Food and Drug Administration said the generic Viagra, which is made by an online seller, will be sold through a South Korean company and will be available in South Korea at a price of around KRKR 45 million (about KR$ 1.07 billion) for the first time.
"Viagra is a very popular drug in South Korea," said an FDA official. "We are very pleased to approve the application," he added.
But the company said it was "reviewing the manufacturing procedure and evaluating the manufacturing process" to ensure the drug is safe and effective.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in the drug, was originally developed as an erectile dysfunction drug. But it is now approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs.
Under a South Korean patent, the company is required to make payments to the makers of generic versions of the drug.

The company also said the generic drug is "more expensive and less effective" than the branded version.
"We're pleased to be working with the regulatory authorities and the pharmaceutical industry to approve the generic version of Viagra," the FDA said.
In its approval request, the FDA said it was "reviewing the manufacturing procedure and evaluating the manufacturing process" to ensure the drug is safe and effective.
